Remembering The Pike River Miners

Dunedin (Thursday, 25 November 2010) - The Dean of Dunedin is offering St Paul’s Cathedral as a place for people to remember and pay tribute to the Pike River miners lost in the recent tragedy.

Dean Trevor James says the Cathedral will be open daily from 9am and be available for people to come pray, light a candle or sign a condolence book to remember the 29 lives lost.

“The tragic event touches us all. The doors of the Cathedral are open to all who want to come here to remember those who have perished and send prayers and condolences to their families,” he says.

Mayor Dave Cull acknowledges the importance of a place of peace in this time of national sorrow.

“It is with great sorrow and distress that we heard yesterday of the tragic loss of life in the Grey community. While we know we can’t comprehend the sense of grief and bereavement that the Greymouth community and families are experiencing, the people of Dunedin are grieving for them,” he says.
