Wellington Police investigate incident where man attempts to lure teenager into car in Newtown
Wellington Police are investigating an incident earlier this week where a man attempted to lure a teenage girl into his car in Newtown.
Detective Sergeant Penny Gifford says at about 8:10am on Monday morning a 13 year old was walking to high school along the northern end of Constable Street, where she walked past a man in a car who asked her to get into his vehicle.
"The victim told the man 'no', and he again asked her to get into his car, with more force in his voice, and again she declined."
Detective Sergeant Gifford says the man then drove alongside her slowly, laughing, before driving off.
"A witness at a nearby bus stop in Constable Street then called out to the victim and asked if she was okay. We're really keen to speak to this witness to help us with our inquiries."
The offender is alleged to have been driving an old four door sedan, either greyish white or faded silver in colour. In the back of the vehicle there were two childrens' car seats. The offender is described as a Pacific Islander with short shaved hair and a moustache on his upper lip.
Penny Gifford says this was a scary incident for the victim who was left shaken and Police are keen to identify this offender to prevent any further incidents.
"Anyone who witnessed this incident on Monday morning or who may be able to identify this offender is urged to contact Wellington Police as soon as possible on (04) 381 2000 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
