David Lange Care Home for Mangere Community

David Lange Care Home for Mangere Community

Bupa Care Services are pleased to announce the name for their facility development in Mangere, Auckland, will be the David Lange Care Home.

Bupa Care Services invited the local community to get involved by way of voting on a new name for the facility. After asking Bupa staff nationwide to come up with names, recommendations were put out to the community for their opinion. Several staff put forward the David Lange name for his strong connection and substantial contribution to the Mangere district.

David Lange’s wife Margaret Pope is pleased with the result, she said “I am thrilled that David’s name will be kept in the community, as an MP he had a lot of involvement with the home in its earlier incarnation”.

“We were delighted with the response received from the local community and are grateful that Margaret Pope supports ours and the community’s wishes to name the care after the late David Lange.” said Dwayne Crombie, CEO of Bupa Care Services.

Located on the corner of James and Massey Roads, the David Lange care home will see potentially an additional 91 hospital level care beds, within a district which has a growing elderly population and is under bedded relative to its population.

The refurbishment work will be undertaken in 2 key stages with the first stage due for completion in early 2011 providing 41 care beds, followed by another 50 care beds during the next six months. This two stage development will coincide with the expansion of Bupa’s specialist dementia care services at Parkhaven Hospital 1km away, that will see further conversion of hospital to psychogeriatric care beds as appropriate, again meeting a demand in the Counties Manukau District.

Bupa Care Services are investing $2.3m in the refurbishment of this site. Bupa's rest homes and hospitals offer care for older people who can no longer live independently. Their services include respite, rehabilitative and mental health care, day care and specialist dementia care. Their 45 rest homes and hospitals serve many communities, from Whangarei to Timaru.
