Cyclist Dead After Being Hit By Car
A 71 year old male cyclist is dead, and another is critically injured, after a vehicle has struck them on the Morrinsville-Walton Road, around 12 kilometres south of Morrinsville.
The crash occurred shortly after 9am, when a group of cyclists were out on a morning ride. 7 other cyclists were present, and whilst unhurt, appear to be in shock as a result of the crash.
Police and other emergency services are still at the scene, and the road will remain closed whilst the matter is investigated. Diversions have been put in place for traffic.
Police are unable to state at this stage if speed or alcohol seem to be a factor in the crash, but are investigating early indications that the car involved went around a blind corner on the wrong side of the road, subsequently hitting the cyclists.
