The cruise liner,
Carnival Splendour, is being towed to San Diego , following
an engine fire which has now been extinguished. The ship
remains seaworthy.
• It is being escorted by the United States Navy and United States Coastguard. Should it be necessary to find a port closer than San Diego the ship will head for Ensenada, Mexico.
• We are aware of 9 Zealanders on board. Due to privacy considerations we cannot provide more details.
• The New Zealand Consulate-General, Los Angeles, has been in contact with Carnival Cruise Lines, and they have confirmed there are no medical issues and everyone on board is safe and well.
• An information line has been established by Carnival Cruise Lines to provide information to family and friends. The contact number is +1 305 406 5534
• At present communications with the ship is limited with only outgoing phone lines available for use by passengers.
• We understand the cruise liner will reach San Diego midday tomorrow (Friday) New Zealand time.
