Wellington’s Population Continues to Grow

The continuing growth in Wellington’s population in the face of the government’s cap on public service numbers is very encouraging according to the Wellington Employers’ Chamber of Commerce.

Statistics New Zealand figures released today show that Wellington city grew by 2,200 people or 1.1% over the year to 30 June 2010 to reach an estimated population of 197,700 at that date.

“The population increase was lower than previous years and slightly lower than New Zealand’s overall growth rate of 1.2%, but it is still very pleasing in light of the reduction in public service numbers that Wellington has been exposed to,” said Chamber President Richard Stone.

“The increased number of people living in the city shows the resilience of the Wellington economy. It suggests that other parts of the local economy are growing, in spite of the contraction of the government sector, and are attracting people to live in Wellington.

“The Chamber recognises the importance of the government sector to Wellington but not surprisingly we also want to see growth in private sector activity.

“Today’s figures show that net migration (internal as well as international) contributed more than 400 people to the population increase. This is slightly less than the preceding year but is encouraging in the current environment.

“Population growth is very positive for Wellington. It is a crucial component of the increasing vibrancy and business vitality of the city.

“Wellington’s new council has an important job in capitalising on the population growth, ensuring infrastructural development keeps pace, and providing an environment so that growth can sustainably continue,” Mr Stone concluded.
