Whitebaiter Still Missing

Whitebaiter Still Missing

Okarito South Westland, Tasman

A Search & Rescue operation was launched at approximately 9.00am this morning by police after three white baiters were swept out to sea by a wave from the Okarito River mouth.

Locals and other fisherman at the scene were able to use a boat and recovered two persons from the water, but a third man is still missing.

The two recovered men had been handed on to Ambulance staff at the scene. They were cold and had swallowed some water but were otherwise okay.

The missing man was wearing a wetsuit at the time.

The Solid Energy Rescue Helicopter and another local aircraft from Fox & Franz Josef Heliservices are currently searching an area of several square miles both north and south of the Okarito River mouth.

A fixed wing aircraft from the Coastal Air Patrol with trained air observers on board has been tasked to sweep the search area also.

Conditions for searching at present are described as good.

Further details of the missing man will be released in a later update, but not at this time.
