Wellington Police urge motorists to take it easy this long weekend
Police are urging motorists to take it easy on the roads in and around Wellington this Labour Weekend.
Wellington District Road Policing Manager Inspector Peter Baird says Police are aiming for a fatality-free holiday weekend on the roads.
"Police will be out in force right throughout the Wellington district over the upcoming long weekend, with the intent to moderate speed and careless driving, through high visibility, and enforcement if needed."
Inspector Baird says nationally, Police are reintroducing the speed tolerance to four kilometres per hour over any speed limit for the official holiday period, following its success at Queen's Birthday Weekend.
"Last year at Labour Weekend, fortunately there were no fatal crashes in the Wellington district and we want to make sure it stays that way this long weekend."
Inspector Baird says patience is needed by drivers heading out of the Wellington district this weekend, particularly as traffic will be congested around the Whenua Tapu/Pukerua Bay areas and again south of Waikanae, likewise on Monday when travellers return home.
"It's important to remember that your holiday starts the moment you leave home, and your journey needs to be factored into your holiday, so please be prepared for some disruption."
The official holiday period for Labour Weekend for 2010 will begin at 4pm on Friday 22 October and ends at 6am on Tuesday 26th October.
