Corrections has designs on new uniform
“A comprehensive review of the uniform worn by Corrections’ custodial staff is well underway with the Department working to finalise a design for a new uniform,” Assistant General Manager Prison Services Brendan Anstiss says.
The current green custodial uniform was introduced in 1976, and although minor changes have been made, it has not been comprehensively reviewed in over 30 years. The aim of the review is to create a uniform that provides greater functionality for our staff when performing a variety of custodial duties.
It is also part of a wider programme to develop the professionalism, capability and safety of custodial staff.
“Corrections has invested heavily in the last ten years to improve the security of prisons, provide additional safety equipment and de escalation training to staff, as well as providing a greater number of rehabilitation programmes to prisoners.
“The Department has very dedicated, effective and skilled custodial staff and we want a good quality, modern and functional uniform that represents them.”
Mr Anstiss says that feedback from staff is that the current uniform is uncomfortable and not functional.
“Staff have had the opportunity to consider design options for a new uniform during September and October. Consultation took place at all prison sites, where staff were able to view the proposed uniform designs up close. Around 1,100 staff have had a close inspection of the design options and over 1000 staff have responded to an online survey on the designs.
“136 staff attended focus groups which were established to discuss the operational requirements in more detail,” Mr Anstiss says.
The uniform design colour being considered is blue to align the Department with the wider Justice sector (Customs, Courts, and Police). The designs are focused on ensuring that the uniforms will allow staff to meet day-to-day requirements, as well as formal obligations such as appearing in court.
A decision on the final design of the uniform will be made once the consultation period has been completed.
