We can now recycle even more!

We can now recycle even more!

Friday, October 08, 2010

Hutt City residents can now recycle all plastics numbered 1 to 7, excluding polystyrene, in their kerbside recycling collection.

Previously only plastics numbered 1 and 2 could be recycled because there was no reliable market for other plastics.

Our recycling contractor has recently found a market for other plastics which means a wider range can now be collected.

Hutt City Council’s general manager development services Kim Kelly says the change will make it easier for residents to do their bit for the environment.

“Last year 6,700 tonnes of recycled material was collected in Hutt City and I hope now that more plastics can be collected more people will give recycling a go and we’ll further reduce the amount of waste going to landfill,” she says.

Recyclers are encouraged to wash away any food or liquid before they put things out for recycling as it’s safer for our contractors to sort if everything is clean.

It’s also a good idea to secure your recycling so it doesn’t blow away when the wind picks up.

Flexi-nets, which sit securely over your recycling bin to stop items taking fight, are available from council’s main building on Laings Road. Large nets cost $12 and small nets cost $10. Green recycling bins are available for $10. You can also pack your recycling in plastic shopping bags before putting them in your bin as a cheaper alternative.
