Nathan Homestead Celebrates 85th Anniversary

Join in for Children's Art Competition and Community Arts Open Day

Nathan Homestead is completing 85 successful years of existence and invites everyone to a Community Arts Open Day on 30 October. The celebration is filled with performances and activities that promise to offer a great opportunity for people to see the vibrant arts community of Manukau in action. The historic homestead was built in 1925 and became Manurewa Arts Centre in 1978.

The art centre is also presenting the Nathan Homestead Open Day Children’s Art Competition. First prize is a luxurious breakfast for the winner and four guests, prepared by the Nathan Homestead Cafe and served in the homestead’s original dining room. They will also receive $100 and $500 to be donated for books to their school library. There will also be a cash prize of $75 and $50 for the second and third prize winners.

The competition is open to students aged between 7 to 12 years old who are invited to design a birthday card that contains the words ‘Happy Birthday Nathan Homestead’. The participants can be as imaginative as they like using any artistic mediums as long as the card is A5 size when folded.

All entries will be displayed at Nathan Homestead on the Open Day and then put in a time capsule for Nathan Homestead's 100th birth anniversary in 2025.

The Community Arts Open Day takes place on 30 October with an exciting schedule of events for the whole family planned. Activities include: artist talks, tours, classic cars, free drama and art workshops, and tutor demonstrations from painting to pottery. Enjoy live music by St Anne's Junior Cook Island Group, pianist Robin Kelly and the fantastic 18-piece big band Brett's New internationals who specialise in playing the jazz and dance music of the roaring Twenties.
