No C&R involvement in voting fraud case

5 October 2010 Media statement

No C&R involvement in voting fraud case

Citizens & Ratepayers have confirmed that no C&R candidate is involved in the alleged Papatoetoe voting fraud which has seen two people arrested.

President John Slater is now calling on the President of the Labour Party to make the same claim regarding Labour candidates. Mr Slater also said it would be helpful if Mayor Len Brown could confirm he has had no involvement with either of the two people suspected of the scam.

"C&R commends the police for taking action on what may be the worst case of electoral fraud in New Zealand's history.

"We are pleased our complaint of 7 September to the Electoral Officer has been upheld but remain deeply concerned about the potential impact of the alleged voting fraud on the voting process.

Mr Slater said Aucklanders needed an assurance from electoral officials and the Police that all votes that have been processed are valid votes.

"With voting nearly complete in the largest election in Auckland's history, voters need complete confidence that the integrity of the voting system has been upheld."
