Maori Statutory Board call for mataawaka nominations

Nominations for mataawaka representatives on the new Maori Statutory Board for Auckland are being requested.

The Maori Statutory Board has been established by the government to offer advice to the new Auckland Council on issues that affect mana whenua and mataawaka.

Mataawaka members will represent Maori living in the Auckland region who are not in a mana whenua group.

Seven mana whenua representatives and two mataawaka representatives will make up the Maori Statutory Board for Auckland (Tamaki Makaurau). The appointments will be made by an Iwi Selection Body which has been appointed by the Minister of Maori Affairs.

Chairman of the Iwi Selection Body, Tame Te Rangi, says the body is looking for people who are acknowledged leaders in their community.

“Nominees will need knowledge in te reo, tikanga and matauranga as well as a deep understanding of Tamaki Makaurau and experience in matters that relate to local government. Most of all they will need a passion to serve all Auckland’s Maori and ensure their voice is heard loud and clear.”

“We would also like to hear from mataawaka in relation to the selection of matawaaka representatives,” he says.

Nominations for both roles will be accepted from today until 5pm, 13 October, 2010. Appointments will be made by 29 October to enable the Maori Statutory Board to come into effect at the same time as Auckland Council on 1 November.
