Naenae boxing school scoops top voluntary award

Mayor David Ogden congratulates the Naenae Youth Charitable Trust for Billy Graham Boxing Academy for their supreme award win at the 2010 Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards.

“Billy Graham and his volunteer coaches at the boxing academy are superb role models for young men in our city and I applaud them for the positive difference they are making in the Naenae community.

“Billy is a remarkable man, a remarkable New Zealander, a person of great mana and an inspiration to many.”

Naenae Youth Charitable Trust for Billy Graham Boxing Academy offer programmes to help and support the physical, social and educational development of local youth, including those who are socially disadvantaged, and from dysfunctional families. Each year close to a hundred young men aged 11 to 18 years old participate in the programme.

“As well as teaching them to be better people, the academy has given the boys self belief to realise their dreams, the value of hard work and respect for others.

“I’m proud to see Hutt City groups recognised regionally as I believe we have more than our fair share of dedicated and community-minded people in our city.”
