Mass stranding of pilot whales Spirits Bay Northland

A mass stranding of pilot whales has taken place next to the camping ground at Spirits Bay in Northland. DOC, Far North Whale Rescue and Project Jonah volunteers from as far away as Auckland have been mobilised to assist in their rescue. Kimberly Muncaster CEO of Project Jonah will be at the site this afternoon and we will provide updates as and when they are available. We understand cell phone coverage from the site is limited.
Kimberly warns that:

“It is going to be a long night in difficult conditions. Whilst volunteers are very much needed, people need to remember that whilst they are there for the whales they need to look after themselves and each other too. They must come prepared with wet weather gear and plenty of warm clothing.”
