Common sense called for on west coast beaches this weekend
Auckland Regional Council parks staff are reminding people to check weather warnings before venturing out on west coast beaches this weekend.
“We’re appealing to all visitors to our beaches in the Waitakere Ranges area and at Muriwai to check the weather forecast before they venture out,” says Muriwai Regional Park manager Scott De Silva.
“We’re expecting large swells as a result of the MetService severe weather warning, so people need to take care as unpredictable wave surges may come through.
“Muriwai Beach is prone to strong surges that may continue to affect the coastline even after the storm has passed,” he says.
It is advisable to stay away from the beach at high tide.
“Access to Flat Rock and Muriwai Beach may be closed if necessary,” says Mr De Silva.
Piha, Karekare, Anawhata, Whites and Whatipu beaches are included in this weather warning.
“This is also a reminder to rock fishers to take care at all times on Auckland’s high-energy west coast, always wear a lifejacket and not to go out on the rocks when conditions are unsafe,” says Mr De Silva.
For weather forecasts visit or 0900 999 09.
