Regional Council donates to disaster fund
The Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s Finance and Governance Committee has donated $100,000 to the Canterbury region to be used to assist with reinstatement of infrastructure following the recent earthquake.
Councillors voted unanimously to donate the funds through the Canterbury Regional Council to ensure the donation was used to undertake infrastructure repairs.
Committee Chairman Ian Noble said the Bay of Plenty region was well used to serious natural events and the damage they could cause.
“We are well aware of the catastrophic damage that can be done to essential infrastructure through a natural disaster. We hope our donation will go some way towards alleviating the financial cost of repairs to this infrastructure.
“We also know that we too may one day suffer a similar natural disaster, and that at that time we may well be in need of assistance.”
The Region’s Civil Defence and Emergency Management Group has also sent experienced Civil Defence staff to assist the Canterbury Group in managing recovery from the earthquake.
The region’s Civil Defence
Manager, Recovery Manager and five building inspectors have
sent down to date and other staff are being made available
as they are
needed.
