Deutsche Bank Pledges NZ$100,000 to Earthquake Relief in New Zealand
SYDNEY, Sept . 10/Medianet International-AsiaNet
Deutsche Bank today announced it has pledged NZD 100,000 towards recovery efforts in earthquake-affected Christchurch and the surrounding regions in New Zealand.
Brett Shepherd, Deutsche Bank Chief Executive Officer New Zealand, said, "Deutsche Bank has a long-standing commitment to New Zealand - both to the business community and to the wider community in which we operate - and we are looking at different ways to support the people of Christchurch and Canterbury."
Deutsche Bank is working with the appropriate organisations to determine the most suitable way for this support to be delivered and has pledged the funds to a redevelopment fund which is yet to be identified.
Some 100,000 houses have been damaged by Canterbury's 7.1- magnitude earthquake and officials in New Zealand have doubled their estimate for repairing the destruction, which has been aggravated by nearly 300 aftershocks over the past five days.
Deutsche Bank Chairman Australia and New Zealand, John Macfarlane, who is a Cantabrian himself, said, "We hope this contribution will help support those who have suffered loss from the Christchurch earthquake and also assist in the recovery efforts.
Brett Shepherd said, "In addition, we will also match donations up to NZ$10,000 made by our employees to registered charities which have projects dedicated to earthquake relief. Over and above our financial pledge, we will also encourage employees' volunteering efforts toward community projects and services operating in affected areas. "
