Red Cross Canterbury Earthquake Appeal reaches $3.5 million
For immediate release
Donations are flowing in from generous kiwis and businesses across New Zealand in response to the Canterbury Earthquake Appeal, following the earthquake in the early hours of September 4.
Pledges received by Red Cross from businesses throughout the country take the total to over $4million.
An Appeal commission is being set up with representatives from the three affected areas – Christchurch City and the Selwyn and Waimakariri Districts, Red Cross and an independent chair, to create terms of reference and oversee the distribution of the funds.
Red Cross staff and volunteers continue to support Civil Defence and other agencies in the recovery efforts. Teams have been helping support services visiting communities in east Christchurch with on-going tremors causing stress and fatigue across the city.
Meals on Wheels, one of Red Cross’ main community services has continued uninterrupted despite the aftershocks.
