Free counselling support available following quake

Free counselling support available following earthquake

Relationship Services Whakawhanaungatanga is offering free counselling support to people affected by Saturday’s earthquake. The Government has agreed to fund this, recognising the emotional impact of the earthquake on residents.

“The impact of the earthquake and the continuing aftershocks is starting to hit home and we can offer emotional support to help people look after themselves and their families,” said Moira Underdown, Relationship Services Whakawhanaungatanga Canterbury Area Manager.

While many people are busy dealing with the practical issues now, the full emotional impact won’t become apparent for weeks or even months. “Some people need help right now, for others it may be a longer term issue. We will be offering this free counselling service for some time.”

Ms Underdown is confident Relationship Services Whakawhanaungatanga can meet the demand. “We will bring in experienced counsellors from our other offices around the country to ensure people are seen promptly.”

“We are also working with closely with other agencies, including Victim Support and Lifeline.
