Mayoral debate for
young people
ROTORUA 08.09.10: Senior high school students have the opportunity to put Rotorua’s three mayoral hopefuls to the test in a debate next week.
Year 12 and 13 students from Rotorua secondary schools have been invited to the ‘Mayoral Debate on Youth Issues’ in the Rotorua District Council Chamber on Tuesday 14 September from 5pm to 7pm.
RDC youth projects officer Jill Campbell says she is looking forward to the event which involves present mayor Kevin Winters, and mayoral candidates Charles Sturt and Cliff Lee discussing issues submitted by young people.
“With local body elections approaching, Rotorua district youth councillors have explored ways of involving young people in the process.
“A debate provides a good opportunity to pose some tough questions to the mayoral candidates. Their responses to these important youth issues will give our young people some idea of who they might vote for.”
Elections NZ will have enrolment applications available at the ‘Mayoral Debate on Youth Issues’ for those who have not yet registered to vote in the October 9 local government elections.
