Local businesses support Older Persons Day

Local businesses encouraged to support International Older Persons Day

ROTORUA 02.08.10: Rotorua District Council (RDC) is asking local businesses to support older people in the community by planning something special to coincide with next month’s ‘Senior Spring Strut’.

The event encourages elderly people to get stepping as part of International Older Persons Day [1 October]. RDC, Age Concern, ACC, and Rotorua Trust are working together to plan the fun walk, which coincides with the launch of Age Concern’s ‘Spring Fling’ programme.

RDC community services officer Sue White says it would be wonderful to have a week of promotions and activities focusing on positive ageing in the lead-up to the ‘Senior Spring Strut’.

“We want to acknowledge and celebrate the older people in our community and it would be fantastic if local organisations came on board with events, activities or promotions of their own to make this a celebration of note.

“Recreational and service groups can also set up stalls at the actual event with gazebos and tables being provided.”

The ‘Senior Spring Strut’ will begin from RAVE on Friday 1 October at 10am, and participants can choose to walk around Government Gardens or a slightly longer walk around Sulphur Point. Refreshments will be served after the walk.

Age Concern will also launch its ‘Spring Fling’ programme at the event.
