Hutt City landmark turns blue
Hutt City’s clock tower is set to turn blue as part of the nationwide Blue September campaign to raise awareness of prostate cancer.
Landmarks all over the country will be lit blue for September, including Auckland’s Sky Tower, Napier’s Tom Parker Fountain and the Christchurch Art Gallery and Mayor David Ogden is pleased that a Hutt City landmark is being included for the first time.
“Prostate cancer is one of the major killers of New Zealand men, so we’re happy to support Blue September and do what we can to help raise awareness.
“We’ll have blue lighting in the clock tower and a blue light wash over the exterior of the Council chamber and town hall.”
Blue September encourages New Zealanders to ‘face up’ to a disease that affects 2,500 men and kills 600 men a year. It’s estimated that at least half of the annual deaths from prostate cancer could have been prevented had the cancer been diagnosed and treated early enough.
A number of high profile New Zealand people are putting their face to the campaign including All Black legend Buck Shelford, former Tall Black Brendon Pongia, broadcaster and author Kerre Woodham, Shortland Street star Ido Drent, Sir Peter Leitch (The Mad Butcher), MasterChef New Zealand winner Brett McGregor, New Zealand Rugby League player Ruben Wiki and All White Leo Bertos.
