Waipukurau – 20th August 2010: Central Hawkes Bay’s The Festival has this year added to its programme the building of two mega outdoor canvases in front of the stunning Pukeora vineyard, then using paintball guns, will create a massive artwork – possibly a New Zealand first.

Respected international artist Cefyn Gauden and Central Hawkes Bay College Art Teacher Rebekah Wright will be this years selected artists to create the mega artworks onto two large canvases. The frames will each stand 4.5 metres above the ground when constructed.

Although not a world first, the event is possibly a first for New Zealand and it is hoped the event will attract a large crowd to the Festival on the Sunday afternoon, especially if the weather stays dry & warm.

6,000 visitors attended The Festival 2009 over the four days and similar numbers are again anticipated for this year.

The paintball event will take place on Sunday behind the main Pukeora building overlooking the San Hill Vineyard. The resulting masterpieces can be purchased at the end of the day via auction thanks to Property Brokers, with proceeds going to The Festival’s nominated charities or individuals requiring funding.

With over 115 exhibitors attending from all over New Zealand, this is an increase over 2009.

The Festival has this year secured Ruth Pretty, celebrity Chef/Caterer/Cooking School owner who works from home in Te Horo. Ruth will be demonstrating at 11am and 1pm on Friday the 3rd of September. This is free to anyone interested & will be held in the main food court in the dining room. Ruth has a huge catering kitchen, retail shop & cooking school in a beautiful old home.

Also demonstrating is Cake Decorator & tutor of Sugarcraft - Lindy Roxburgh. Lindy will be giving demonstrations at 11am and 2.30pm on both Saturday and Sunday. This is free to all interested people. Lindy has taught the craft in several countries around the world and now resides in the Hawkes Bay teaching Sugarcraft & Cake Decorating.

Raymond van Rik who owns the Te Mata Peak Restaurant in Havelock North has made himself famous with his barbeque courses aiming at the male folk - who often claim to be experts in this field. Raymond will be running a Barbeque Course at 4pm on the Saturday afternoon of The Festival. To register for the course, visit the front desk in the entry vestibule. The cost is $40 to attend this course. Raymond will also give short talks about his products during Saturday and Sunday from the demonstration area in the dining room.

The Warratahs play at Pukeora Estate on Friday night the 3rd of September and tickets are still available from Electra Gallery on Waipukurau’s main street. Tickets are $65 and include complimentary nibbles. Steak sandwiches, baked potatoes & crepes from exhibitors will also be available for purchase, as well as a cash bar.

This year, the event will also include a Fireworks display provided by East Coast Fireworks. These should be able to be viewed by most of Waipukurau’s residents due to the high vantage point of Pukeora Estate.

The Festival 2010 will once again host the Weta School Art Awards & the Centralines Art Extravaganza, both premiere events in the programme. Both art events attract a large turnout.

The Festival runs from Thursday the 2nd of September through to Sunday the 5th of September from 10am to 4pm. Entry charges have remained the same as 2009 - $7.50 for adults and no charge for children under the age of 16.

All proceeds from The Festival are re-distributed through a grants process to local organisations or individuals that are art or culture related. In previous years, The Festival has contributed to the Waipawa Library Upgrade, Waipawa Town Hall upgrade, Little Theatre Waipukurau and has provided financial assistance to locals Abby Jane-Taylor & Hollie Keir to attend the Highland Dancing World Champs in Edinburgh.
