Do they know their Maungakiekie from their Maungawhau?
Just how much do John Banks and Len Brown really know about Auckland? A month out from the super city elections, finally we’re about to find out.
The two leading candidates for super city mayor are going head-to-head in the Metro Mayoral Super Quiz at Sale St on September 5.
Rather than spouting well-rehearsed political themes, the candidates, and a few of their closest advisers, are being subjected to a grilling on their knowledge about the super city they aspire to lead.
Organised by Metro magazine, the Metro Mayoral Super Quiz is under the adjudication of renowned ‘opinionist’ Te Radar. Limited numbers of tickets are available to the public for the free-of-charge event.
“If you thought local body politics was no laughing matter, the quiz is more than likely to change your mind,” says Metro editor Simon Wilson. “This event is really going to show who knows his Maungakiekie from their Maungawhau.”
Banks and Brown - here identified alphabetically for neutrality’s sake - will be supported by their selected teams of experts to answer questions on a variety of Auckland-based topics. Points will be awarded and a winner declared on the night.
Questions will relate to the area covered by the new super city and will be asked in 10 categories such as popular entertainment, Pasifika, history, sport and recreation, the arts, the environment and the future.
Audience participation is a must according to Simon Wilson.
“Te Radar will be tossing a few questions at the audience just to make sure everyone is paying attention. We’ve got a few prizes for those who know their super city facts,” Wilson says.
The quiz is on at Sale
St bar and restaurant on Sunday September 5 starting at
6pm.
