Help plan Mangere town centre
Public feedback is sought on plans for Mangere town centre which include proposed new streets, a wider range of housing choices and a strong focus on the community.
The Mangere Town Centre and Neighbourhood District Plan has been publicly notified, with formal submissions open until 22 September. A public information day will be held at the Mangere town centre mall on Saturday 4 September from 9.30am – midday. Information will also be in libraries at the Mangere town centre, Mangere Bridge and Mangere East.
Manukau City Council Environment Director Ree Anderson says the plan takes a new approach to planning for future development.
“It takes account of market realities, the role the private sector, government agencies and the importance of urban design in helping the council deliver the plan.”
“The plan will provide a framework for future development that can be used by the new Auckland Council.”
Features of the draft Mangere Town Centre and
Neighbourhood District Plan include:
• A proposed new
street between Waddon Place and Windrush Close to create
better connections with the town centre
• Proposed new
streets in the town centre; the market will continue to be
located on the town centre carparks
• Two to five
storey buildings overlooking streets in the town centre
area, with a mix of options for shops and residential
development
• Allowing development on Paynes Island
reserve on the corner of Mascot Ave and Bader Drive, and
reserve on the corner of Court Town Close and Bader Drive
which will be balanced with improved public spaces and
retail
• Five ‘Management Areas’ – Mangere Town
Centre, Mangere Community, Residential, Local Shops and
Streets, Open Spaces and Walkways.
• A variety of
housing types to provide wider choices for the community -
allowing more flexibility in design on larger lots
• A
simplified planning process, including changes to resource
consent approvals for buildings
• Stronger urban
design focus
• Investigating mechanisms to get the
right type of development, including public led initiatives
to encourage private development and partnerships with
government departments and Housing New Zealand
Corporation.
People can find out more and have their say by going to www.manukau.govt.nz/mangeretownplan or coming to the public information day to discuss the plans with council staff. Information will also be in the Mangere town centre, Mangere Bridge and Mangere East libraries.
