Hawke’s Bay trail receives $1.89 million

Hawke’s Bay trail receives $1.89 million from New Zealand Cycle Trail project

Nga Haerenga, The New Zealand Cycle Trail project will sign its contract for the new Landscapes Trail at a formal event, which will be attended by Prime Minister and Tourism Minister Rt. Hon John Key in Napier today.

The Landscapes Trail is a joint initiative of the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council and The New Zealand Cycle Trail project.

New Zealand Cycle Trail Programme Manager John Dunn says the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council had done an outstanding job on the planning for the Landscapes Trail making today’s contract signing possible.

“I see the Landscapes Trail as a catalyst for economic development,” Mr Dunn says. “The cycle trails are important in their own right, but at the end of the day the Government is making a $1.89 million investment in Hawke’s Bay’s communities.

“This contract will help accomplish the goals of the New Zealand Cycle Trail project which are to generate lasting economic, social and environmental benefits for New Zealand communities through a network of world class cycling experiences. The creation of the Landscapes Trail will also enhance New Zealand’s reputation as a premium tourist destination,” Mr Dunn says.

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council Chairman Alan Dick says Hawke’s Bay is privileged to be selected to be one of the “great rides” in the New Zealand Cycle Trail network.

“The Landscape trail promises to be a brilliant ride for all levels of riders, offering iconic Hawke’s Bay scenery. It will be enjoyed by the many local riders, and will be a great attraction for visitors to the region looking for an outdoor experience,” Mr Dick says.

The 55km Landscapes Trail will connect with existing Rotary pathways and loops around the Tukituki Valley, Te Mata Peak, the village of Havelock North and includes a section along the coast between Haumoana and Te Awanga.

The Landscapes Trail links the Hawke’s Bay’s renowned tourism infrastructure including wineries, cafes, and fishing spots, and can be accessed from all of the regions three main centres, Napier, Hastings and Havelock North.

“The trail is on largely flat country with an all weather surface. When you consider Hawke’s Bay’s famously sunny weather, this trail will create a sustainable year-round tourism offering which will be achievable for most cycling skill levels,” Mr Dunn says.

“Work is still in progress on the planned Water ride near Napier, offering a contrasting marine and estuary landscape. With increasing numbers of cruise ships coming to Hawke’s Bay in the next few years, both these routes will be close enough for many of these visitors to enjoy,” Mr Dick added.
