Promise Not To Privatise Water
Mayor Len Brown says he strongly supports public ownership and management of water assets and opposes any proposals to
either privatise water or give private companies 35 year management contracts for water supplies.
“My current council has delivered no increases to water rates while the water company is under public control. I believe
strategic assets need to remain under public ownership,” says Len Brown.
“I am committed to public ownership of our water assets and services. I will not flip-flop. I will not say one thing one
day and another thing another day on this issue.
“Manukau City Council passed a submission that said it does not support provisions allowing a local government
organisation to enter into contracts for the operation of water services for a 35 year term, as provided for in the
Local Government Amendment Bill.
“I stand by the decision of my council. The Auckland public can trust me on this one. My background has been to protect
public assets, not privatise them.”
