Ditching Of ‘Mad Mining Proposal’ Welcomed
Mayor Len Brown has welcomed the decision not to commence mining on Great Barrier Island.
“The mining proposal was mad. Great Barrier Island is too precious to dig up. I am glad the government has, belatedly, recognised that,” says Len Brown.
“Great Barrier Island is in Auckland’s backyard and has special importance to people across the region and around New Zealand. It provides great eco-tourism opportunities, a great lifestyle and a wonderful environment.
“This is a victory for the conservationists, Great Barrier residents, and many thousands of Aucklanders who made their opposition clear. I’m glad the government has listened.
“We need to protect Auckland’s unique environment for future generations. Protecting Great Barrier is a part of that.”
