Ruru fronting back to school
road safety campaign
ROTORUA 15.07.10: A flock of native owls has been sighted in Rotorua as over 30 ‘Ruru the morepork’ road safety billboards go up around local schools this week.
Ruru first made his appearance with road safety messages on State Highway 5 billboards before making his way into the city urging local motorists to reduce speed, and is now appearing around schools with children’s safety as the main objective.
Rotorua District Council road safety coordinator Jodie Lawson says the new ‘Back to School’ campaign reinforces previous years’ warnings to drivers that it’s time to slow down when there are school children around.
“Many people will be familiar with the yellow ‘Slow Down for Kids’ billboards that go up at the start of each term warning drivers that children are back at school.
“The new billboard graphic retains the tagline and yellow background but the graphics have evolved to encompass the popular Ruru morepork character
“We want to make the community aware that Ruru is Rotorua's road safety mascot and about his role to warn, protect and advise.”
The ‘Back to School’ billboards will be in place outside Rotorua schools for four weeks.
