Wine helping to bring winter food to Nelson and Tasman Community

Tasman family-owned and run vineyard Blackenbrook has extended its mid-winter charity donation in the hopes of bringing some more food to those who most need it.

For every bottle of Blackenbrook Chardonnay, St Jacques Pinot Noir, Reserve Pinot Noir or Montepulciano ordered from their website up until July 16, they will donate a can of food or some fresh fruit to the Nelson Community Foodbank.

It's been a cold and rainy winter so far.  Coupled with the lack of employment currently available there must be more people in our local community than ever struggling to put food on the family table or to heat their homes.  Many local children have to go to school with empty tummies and so we wanted to do our bit and try to help a little," says Ursula Schwarzenbach, of Blackenbrook Vineyard.

The Nelson Community Foodbank was set up 12 years ago by a group of community agencies who decided it was better to have a central bank of food, rather than each agency having a small stash.

Foodbank Co-ordinator Jackie McCullagh says in 2009 the foodbank provided food for 2032 people across Nelson and Tasman.

“We tend to think life in this region is very comfortable but there is another side to life here. For many people on low incomes the only place to save money is on food. These are not people with drug or alcohol problems but rather low income families struggling to survive in the present economy," says Jackie McCullagh.

There’s an extra incentive for those who buy the wine. Blackenbrook gives buyers a 15% discount if you order a case or 5% if you go for six bottles. There’s also  free delivery to the Nelson Tasman Region
