Smoother Skyline, Better Lighting For Eden Park
Smoother Skyline, Better Lighting For Eden Park
15 June 2010 – Auckland, NZ Work is underway to remove the massive dual Light Towers above Eden Park’s ASB Stand in the next stage of the venue’s ongoing redevelopment. The towers will be replaced by less intrusive internal lighting.
The Towers will be removed over the next four days. Removal is to be carried out during the daytime, to minimise the inconvenience to the surrounding residents while many people are at work.
Chief Executive Officer, Eden Park Trust, David Kennedy, says the removal of the Light Towers from the ASB Stand offers a more streamlined skyline, as well as a significant reduction in glare and light spill to the surrounding community.
“For years the light towers have jutted into the Mt Eden skyline, and been especially visible during night games. We’re pleased to be able to contain the lighting to improve the experience for spectators inside the park while also minimising the external impact of the lights.”
With the removal of the towers, the ASB Stand will in future be illuminated by internal lights, located along the entire roofline of the stand. The new lighting consists of almost 200 individual lights, supplied by Philips.
“The roofline lights offer less glare and a better viewing experience for spectators, both at the park and on television,” says Mr Kennedy.
The work will be carried out by Mainzeal – who have contracted NZ Cranes and D&H Steel Rigging to complete the removals.
The light towers are to be donated to Auckland rugby clubs, who have already received the temporary sports light poles used on the South Stand for the past two and a half years. Each of the tower structures, each containing approximately 12 tonnes of steel, will also be recycled.
“The removal of the Light Towers marks a very visible next step in Eden Park’s continuing transformation to a world-class venue for Rugby World Cup 2011 and beyond,” Mr Kennedy concluded.
