Family inspires winning lyrics

A song written for her beloved “Nan” proved a winner for Glendene teenager Jana Nee, the supreme winner in Waitakere Libraries’ first ever Launch Your Lyrics competition.

Jana’s song, I Carry You, took out the grand prize in the competition held to celebrate New Zealand Music Month. More than 140 entries were received from Waitakere school children.

A verse from Jana’s winning entry:
“All my ancestors who have come but
Now have flown away,
Leave behind their spirits which I feel
Right here today.”

The win was extra special for the Avondale College student because she received her prize from New Zealand artist and guest judge Anika Moa.

Moa also performed at the prizegiving with Jana joining in on an impromptu duet with the chart-topping artist.

Also on hand to give out prizes were Waitakere Deputy Mayor Penny Hulse and councillors Judy Lawley and Linda Cooper.
