Security Officer Still Keeping Lower Hutt Safe

A Lower Hutt ADT Armourguard security officer who was last year named security guard of the year has again been acknowledged by the Police for his quick thinking.

Martin Wickham who patrols the Lower Hutt industrial area, helped Police to make 14 arrests for burglaries in the area over a nine month period last year.

He was recently commended again for his part in the arrest of two men who allegedly started a fire in a public toilet block.

While on patrol at C L Bishop Park in Eastbourne, he noticed a lot of noise and smoke coming from the toilet block.

Upon entering the building, he came across two men acting suspiciously and immediately called the Police.

ADT Armourguard General Manager, Ian Anderson, said over the 18 years that Martin has worked in the security industry; he has developed a strong ability to notice suspicious behaviour and take action.

“Over the years, he has built a really good rapport with local Police. He was presented with the Security Guard of the Year Award last year after being nominated for his on-the-job intuition and ability to help the Police in staying one step ahead of burglars,” Ian said.

Martin said the key to his success comes down to a desire to help others, the confidence and trust he has in his patrol team, along with “a bit of luck”.

“A lot of the time it’s just being in the right place at the right time and simply trusting my instinct.”

The veteran security guard said doing something for others and helping the Police to make arrests and keep the Lower Hutt area safe is what motivates him to patrol Lower Hutt’s industrial area.

“It’s a great feeling to go home at the end of a hard day knowing that what I’m doing is really making a difference and is helping to protect people and property. It’s very fulfilling to do something for the community which is why this line of work is so rewarding.”
