Outer tees closed at Point Howard Wharf
Outer tees closed at Point Howard
Wharf
Hutt City Council has closed the
northern and southern tees of the Point Howard Wharf after a
routine survey identified timber and steel fixings
deteriorating faster than expected.
Council's Reserve Asset Manager, Craig Cottrill says “While the risk of a structural failure on the outer tees is low the consequences could be high and we’re adopting a safety first approach. Severe weather, a drifting log, container or boat could result in weakened piles being snapped or dislodged.”
"We are currently looking at various options for the wharf. In the meantime, engineers have recommended that the outer tees remain closed to the public."
The wharf was formerly used as a tanker terminal but is now used by recreational fishermen, the Lowry Bay Yacht Club and a local business. Point Howard Wharf was acquired by Hutt City Council at the time of the local government amalgamation and the disestablishment of the Wellington Harbour Board.
