Tsunami Alert
Analysis of information being received suggests that any effect around Banks Peninsula will now be at the low end of the
one to three metre prediction. Christchurch City Council Civil Defence Emergency Management and the Regional Emergency
Management Office will continue monitoring and communicate with the National Crisis Management Centre. Other local
authorities throughout the region will monitor the situation appropriate to the level of risk of their area.
Any changes in predications based on new information will be communicated immediately to the public, as it possible that
any effects may be delayed by six or more hours.
The tide is now coming in, so we strongly encourage people to continue to be aware that may be changes in sea levels
around beaches, river mouths, inlets, jetties, wharfs, and bays. Earlier advice to stay away from river mouths is still
in place, due to the unpredictable nature of the sea around these areas. Strong currents and surges, particularly nearer
to the shore, may affect boaties.
