Hazardous waste disposal available to residents

Hazardous waste disposal available to Rotorua residents 364 days a year

ROTORUA 26.02.10: Rotorua residents are being encouraged to dispose of hazardous wastes by using the Rotorua District Council’s free hazardous waste disposal facility located at the district landfill.

RDC works manager Peter Dine said it was important that wastes such as poisons and chemicals were disposed of safely and the council had developed a secure facility specifically for this purpose.

“This service has been in place for some years and is available to local residents every day of the year except Christmas Day, and it's free. So there’s no need to stockpile these sorts of potentially dangerous wastes at home,” he said.

Mr Dine’s comments follow news this week about an Environment Bay of Plenty mobile hazardous waste collection vehicle called Hazmobile which would be travelling to some places in the Bay of Plenty in the next two months but would not be visiting Rotorua.

“Some local people may have gained the impression that they might be missing out on a hazardous waste disposal service. But the reason for the Hazmobile not coming to Rotorua is of course that we already have our own facility for disposal of domestic hazardous wastes, and this is open to the public at the landfill 364 days a year.

Mr Dine said that while the council’s disposal service was well-used by many residents, others may not be aware of its existence and may have wondered where and how they can get rid of potentially dangerous chemicals, poisons and other hazardous wastes.

He said that any residents unsure which products could be dropped at the hazardous waste depot at the landfill could call the council on 348 4199.
