Road Closure at Hospital Site

Road Closure at Hospital Site

A section of internal road in front of Christchurch Women’s Hospital will be closed from Monday 22 February until June 2010 to allow for construction of the extension to the second and third floors of the Hospital. This will be similar to the road closure during the construction of the Christchurch Women’s building.

Traffic destined for the Emergency Department and Christchurch Hospital’s main entrance will be the most affected.

“We are putting large orange signage on the road, in accordance with Transit New Zealand specifications, directing vehicles to the right entrances for different services,” Canterbury District Health Board Project Manager Site Redevelopment Brendon Groufsky said.

Traffic approaching Christchurch Hospital on Riccarton Avenue, from the direction of the Riccarton Road roundabout, must use the second entrance by the Nurses Chapel. Anyone who is travelling to Christchurch Hospital from the direction of Tuam Street or Hagley Avenue will be directed to make a u-turn and again use the entrance by the Nurses Chapel.

This entrance will be used by anyone making their way to the Emergency Department or main entrance of Christchurch Hospital. Access to Christchurch Women’s Hospital and Christchurch Hospital’s Oncology Department will be as usual.*

Traffic management plans had been prepared in conjunction with the Christchurch City Council. St John Ambulance and the Fire Service have also been informed. The extension work will allow for the creation of an additional ward for General Medicine, within Christchurch Hospital’s Riverside building, and relocation of the Urology and Cardiology Wards.
