Major recycling success at big events

Major recycling success at big events

ROTORUA 28.01.10: The success of a major rubbish recycling programme implemented for Saturday’s Raggamuffin Reggae Festival is expected to be repeated at this weekend’s [30 January] Lakeside concert.

Sixty five per cent of waste from 30,000 Raggamuffin fans was diverted from the local landfill to be recycled and re-used in other products.

Events & Venues operations manager Crispian Stewart says it is the second year the recycling programme has been in place at Raggamuffin, and he was very pleased with the results.

“Rotorua District Council is always keen to recycle as much waste as possible from events it’s involved in as we’re very conscious of minimising the impact on the local environment.

“The amount recycled equates to eight large Castlecorp truckloads which is a fantastic outcome. We congratulate Rotorua people and visitors for playing their part at the stadium.”

Castlecorp business manager Mijo Katavic says there is now a similar push for concert-goers at this Saturday night’s Lakeside concert at the Village Green to use the recycling bins onsite.

“Last year more than eighty per cent of all rubbish from the show was recycled, meaning less than twenty percent needing to go into the landfill.

“We’d like to achieve the same results, if not better, at this year’s event.”

People attending the lakeside concert are being asked to help by putting their rubbish into appropriate bins located at various places around the venue.
