Aldo Miccio announces 2010 mayoralty candidacy
Nelson to become a visionary city for all generations
Today Aldo Miccio announced his mayoralty candidacy for the 2010 local body elections, saying he wants Nelson to become
a visionary city for all generations of Nelsonians.
Aldo Miccio is currently an active Nelson City Councillor and has successfully secured two Rugby World Cup 2011 matches
for the city, has been instrumental in the Trafalgar Park multi-facility upgrade, has initiated an events venue strategy
to save ratepayers’ money, and has furthered the Council amalgamation debate.
Cr Miccio says he wants to see Nelson become a visionary city that caters for all generations.
“I loved growing up in Nelson, and now I am enjoying raising my three children here,” Miccio says. “Looking into the
future, I want to ensure my children have an option of raising their children here; that we have a city where young
adults have more options for tertiary education and quality jobs; and we are a region where my parents’ generation and
future generations can afford to enjoy their retirement,” he says. “Nelson should be a place we are all proud of; a
great place to live, work and play.
“The current team at Council has tried to move Nelson forward and there is much more that can be, and should be done,”
he says. “As a Councillor I have strived to achieve what I pledged when I was elected, and I believe as mayor I would be
even more effective by utilising my skills in leading teams of people, facilitating debate and helping make decisions
that work towards a set strategy.
“I want to give my passion for Nelson to the people of Nelson,” he says. “I believe my drive, enthusiasm and leadership
skills will help the city achieve its goals, and that is why I am announcing my intention to run for mayor. The future
is very bright for Nelson and its residents if we make the right decisions now.”
Miccio says that as mayor he would initially ensure the Local Government Commission’s council amalgamation study
progresses successfully, that the city fully leverages the Rugby World Cup opportunity and that his cost saving Go
Nelson initiative is implemented. Further platforms are currently being fine-tuned for announcement over the coming
months.
