For the first time in its 15-year history the Ellerslie International Flower Show will have two international feature gardens at this year’s Show.
Multi award-winning Japanese designer Koji Ninomiya (pictured) will join English designer Chris Beardshaw in designing international feature gardens for New Zealand’s premier garden show in North Hagley Park from 10 to 14 March.
Ninomiya, who has judged at Ellerslie for the last decade, will design Ellerslie’s first Japanese garden, says Ellerslie International Flower Show Managing Director Dave Mee.
“Koji has been designing award-winning exhibition show gardens throughout the world for more than two decades and Ellerslie is privileged to have Koji exhibiting at this year’s Show.”
Ninomiya was the first Japanese to design a garden at the Chelsea Flower Show, winning both gold and silver medals. He owns and operates his own perennial plant and garden design business in Japan, while continuing to compete and judge internationally.
Mr Mee says Koji’s designs are always award winning, his last exhibition garden in Melbourne being named Best in Show in 2008.
“I’m sure his traditional Japanese garden for Ellerslie will be another award-winning exhibit.”
Ellerslie International Flower Show Exhibition Manager Kate Hillier says Ellerslie 2010 has more than 30 display gardens and most exciting is the eclectic mix of designs.
“We have An Englishman’s Retreat juxtaposed with a traditional Maori garden, an ice garden, a minimalist Japanese garden and everything in-between which celebrates the cultural heritage and diversity of New Zealand, along with lots of sustainable ideas.
“This year’s Show is one of the most exciting in the history of the Ellerslie International Flower Show,” she says.
Ellerslie International Flower Show is New Zealand’s premier week-long Garden Party in Christchurch’s North Hagley Park from 10 to 14 March 2010. The Show celebrates Christchurch’s Garden City heritage and the best of national and international garden design. Check out the website for further information www.ellerslieflowershow.conz
