Hyundai New Zealand has increased its support of surfing in New Zealand, getting behind the Junior World Surfing Championships, which kick off this week at Piha Beach in Auckland.
The World Junior Surfing Championships is an annual event started in 2003, and 2010 sees the competition being hosted by New Zealand for the very first time. The Opening Ceremony in Mission Bay this Wednesday will launch the event, with the competition in Piha starting on Thursday 21st January, carrying on for the following week and wrapping up with the finals on the Thursday 28th of January.
Kiwi surfers have kept New Zealand as one of the top nations at each event, having entered a team every year since its inception. New Zealand’s Jay Quinn of Gisborne secured New Zealand’s first World Championship in the Under 18 Men’s division in 2001. In 2009 the New Zealand team was placed seventh at the event.
As a 100% New Zealand owned company Hyundai proudly supports surfing, seeing it as an integral part of New Zealand’s culture and identity. Through the sponsorship Hyundai New Zealand will be providing the wheels driving the Junior World Surfing Championship. 10 Hyundai vehicles will be used by staff of the International Surfing Association (ISA), Quicksilver representatives, media staff and the NZ Junior Surfing team over the course of the event.
Today, ISA joint Vice President Alan Atkins was handed the keys to a Hyundai Santa Fe by Hyundai New Zealand’s Marketing Manager Darren Kirkland.
“Hyundai’s involvement in the Junior World Championships is part of our growing support of the wider surfing community in New Zealand which builds on our relationship with Surfing New Zealand and sponsorship of the Hyundai Pro Long Board Tour,” says Kirkland.
Hyundai has been involved with surfing in New Zealand since 2003 and have been a driving force behind the immensely popular Hyundai Pro Longboard Tour since 2006. Through supporting events such as these Hyundai continues to foster the sport, broadening awareness, fundraising for local boardriders clubs and heavily giving back to the community by providing fantastic prizes, merchandise and fun days out for the family to enjoy.
