Central Christchurch Taxi Stands Now Available

Central Christchurch Taxi Stands Now Available

If you've ever struggled to find a taxi in Central Christchurch after 11pm, life has just become a bit easier.

Five new "night time only designated taxi stands" have been created in
the City Centre to make finding a taxi simple and easy. They will
provide more than 50 parking spaces for the use of taxi's only from 11
pm until 5 am from Monday to Sunday.

Alan Beuzenberg, Christchurch City Council Transport and Greenspace
Manager says: "The Taxi Federation and the Police identified that taxis
struggled to find somewhere safe to park after 11 pm in the central city while dropping off or picking up customers in the busiest locations".

"By creating five designated night time only taxi stands in the busiest
parts of the city the taxis now have somewhere safe to drop off and pick up passengers close to the popular nightspots, and where they can wait without blocking the road. The five stands are at
* Litchfield Street, between Colombo Street and Manchester Street
on the southern side,
* Manchester Street between Cashel and Hereford Streets on the
eastern side,
* Hereford Street between Oxford Terrace and Colombo Street on
both sides of the street, and
* Hereford Street between Oxford and Cambridge Terrace on the
northern side near the bridge over the Avon River"

"Clear signs and road markings show the change in parking use from car
parking to taxi-only parking between 11 pm and 5 am. Vehicles, other
than taxi's, that park in the clearly defined taxi stands can be fined
or towed, so It is important that people parking in the area read the
signs to know they must vacate the parking spot before 11 pm", Mr
Beuzenberg says.
