Two killed in a car crash near Towai

Northland District Headquarters
Walton Plaza, Whangärei
Tuesday December 22, 2009

Two people have been killed in a car crash near Towai in Northland this morning.

About 10.40am a southbound truck and a northbound campervan collided on State Highway One about four kilometres north of Towai. A third vehicle, which was following the campervan, also became involved in the crash.

Two European tourists in the campervan, a man and woman aged in their 30s, died at the scene.

The truck driver was not injured and a woman and child in the third vehicle received moderate injuries.

State Highway One has been cordoned off and traffic diversions are still in place.

Police are investigating to determine the cause of the crash.

Far North Area Commander Inspector Chris Scahill says with the loss of two lives on Northland's roads today this is a tragic start to the holiday season.

"The road toll now stands at 34 for the year and with just under two weeks left to the end of the year Police are urging people to take care when travelling on the road.

We don't want to lose anymore lives."
