Mayor Welcomes Vector Agreement on Graffiti

Manukau Mayor Len Brown says the agreement reached in principle between Manukau City Council and Vector regarding the quick removal of graffiti is a positive step forward for the city.

“There has been considerable progress made already and I am pleased this agreement has been reached,” says Mr Brown.

“It means that any graffiti marks on Vector facilities will be removed within 24 hours by the Manukau Beautification Charitable Trust. This is a sign of what can happen when community organisations and businesses work together.”

Mr Brown says Manukau city has been leading the way in graffiti legislation development and management and the council has advocated for the quick removal of graffiti in order to control the problem.

“We have had success in many ways, particularly with regards to public and residential areas.  Our community is stepping up because we don’t want graffiti in our city,” says Mr Brown.

“We are, however, still facing some challenges with private owned commercial properties and service facilities.  Taggers are targeting these facilities because they are not taking off their tags as quickly.  This is something that we need to address because this kind of behaviour has to stop.

“We want to ensure that our city is clean, tidy and proud and while there is still plenty of work to do, I will continue to advocate for stronger partnerships with major service companies, particularly Telecom and other providers,” says Mr Brown.
