ARTA and NZTA challenge Aucklanders to Bike Wise to Work
The Auckland
Regional Transport Authority (ARTA), in partnership with the
NZ Transport Agency, is throwing down the gauntlet to
Aucklanders around the region challenging them to give
cycling to work a go this summer.
The ‘Bike Wise to Work Challenge’ runs for 12 weeks from the 18th January until the 9th of April, and all you have to do to participate is to register online and make the commitment to make at least 10 trips during that time. Registration is now open, it couldn’t be easier, and there’s a chance to win some great prizes as well!
The Bike Wise to Work Challenge is specifically targeted to new cyclists, and registered participants will receive weekly emails with motivational support and practical advice.
Peter Clark, ARTA General Manager, Strategy and Planning said “Cycling to work is a great way to get a daily dose of exercise, and to get out in the fresh air and enjoy the summer weather. Making the pledge to take part in the Bike Wise to Work Challenge in the New Year means that you’ll be able to reach for that extra slice of pavlova without feeling guilty this festive season.”
“The Auckland region has many bike routes and quieter streets that new cyclists may prefer to use, it’s just a matter of knowing where they are.”
“Cycling is also a sustainable form of transport, and by hopping on your bike to make the trip to work rather than hopping in the car you’ll be making a valuable contribution to the reduction of emissions and congestion.”
You can register for the challenge online at www.bikewisetowork.co.nz; the first fifty registrations will receive a special goodie bag and everyone who signs up will receive a cycle map of their local area to help them plan their ride to work.
You can use the challenge website to set your own target, and create a cycling habit that works for you. You don’t have to cycle to work every day, you can start with just once or twice a week? Why not encourage friends and colleagues to join you for support?
To monitor your progress with ease, you can log each trip you make through the Bike Wise to Work website, and for each trip logged you’ll be rewarded with an entry into a monthly prize draw. All participants who complete and log at least 10 cycle trips throughout the duration of the competition will be entered into a draw to win the star prize of an Avanti Explorer 8C bike fitted with mudguards, a rack and panniers. Plus, a bike lock, lights and an Avanti helmet.
“The Bike Wise to Work Challenge is exclusive to the Auckland region, so why not give cycling a try and enjoy the physical and mental benefits it offers.” Mr Clark said.
