Media release: Students’ exhibition highlights artistic growth and development

Students from the Certificate in Whakairo (Applied Arts) and Certificate in Raranga programmes came together to showcase their work to colleagues and whānau at a joint exhibition held at Te Puna o te Matauranga marae at NorthTec in Whangarei last month.

NorthTec applied arts tutor Lorraine King explained that students decided to call their part of the exhibition “Double Take” because that’s just what passersby would do when they walked past the students working on their pieces during the course.

Exhibiting at the NorthTec marae was important to the students, she said, because it was a place where students and their whānau felt comfortable and important.

Student Brian Mitchell said that the 6-month long Certificate in Whakairo (level 3) course had been really inspiring and worthwhile for him even though he already has an established name as a carver and currently tutors wood and stone carving. “I’m a carver but I’ve learnt to do work on canvas on the course. It’s opened up other mediums to be. I’ve been really privileged to do this course. It’s been a priceless experience.”

Brian hopes to continue his studies in Te Reo at NorthTec next year.
