to Summer
Summer has officially arrived and while the calendar year may come to a close this month the city comes alive to the sights and sounds of Garden City SummerTimes.
Every year, the Christchurch City Council coordinates an exciting programme of events and 2009-10 is certainly no different.
This year’s programme will see key feature events return, including the much-anticipated New Year’s Eve celebrations, ASB Classical Sparks, Anthony Harper Lawyers’ Summer Theatre, Tip Top Kite Day and the PGA Golf, just to name a few.
“Fifteen thousand people were in Cathedral Square for last New Year’s Eve and if that is anything to go by this year will be even better,’ said Christchurch City Council Marketing Manager Richard Stokes.
“New Year’s Eve is the ‘official’ start to our Garden City SummerTimes events programme, which each year is well patronised by Christchurch residents.
“From spending lazy Sunday afternoons chilling out in the beautiful Botanic Gardens, listening to a great variety of locally grown live music, to heading down to your local park for community events, we encourage you to get out and explore our wonderful city this Summer.
“The streets will once again come to life in January when local and international performers show their amazing skills as part of the World Buskers Festival.
“And for five days in March, North Hagley Park will be home to the second Christchurch-based Ellerslie International Flower Show,” said Mr Stokes.
Garden City SummerTimes also highlights Christchurch’s diversity with events celebrating a wide range of cultures, from the Chinese Lantern Festival and Waitangi Day to the always popular Culture Galore.
Residents will also have the opportunity to participate in local events and activities when the Summer in the Suburbs events kick into gear in the New Year. From Global Football to Dancing Under the Stars, there will no better way to enjoy summer in our fantastic parks and gardens.
“Keep an eye out for your copy of the Garden City SummerTimes brochure, which will be delivered to your letterbox. The brochure is your complete events guide so keep it handy to ensure you don’t miss any of the excitement that is Summer in Christchurch, “ said Mr Stokes.
