Free Parking Trial In Takapuna Extended

Free Parking Trial In Takapuna Extended For Christmas

The North Shore City Council’s Infrastructure and Environment Committee has agreed to continue extended free parking in Takapuna to cover the Christmas/New Year shopping period.

This decision enables the council to offer two hours free parking during weekdays at its Anzac and Killarney Street car parks.

The decision also allows the free parking trial which began on 1 July this year to continue through to 5 January 2010.

Committee Chair, Councillor Ken McKay, says it makes sense to keep the parking trial in place in order to avoid any confusion for parkers.

“Instead of going back to one hour’s free parking once the trial was completed and then increasing it back up to two hours again before Christmas, it’s sensible we simply carry on with the two hour free trial,” says Councillor McKay.

Councillor McKay also says offering two hours free parking will allow shoppers enough time to do their errands and well as provide for turnover.

“Demand for parking in Takapuna is high and there are the competing needs for extended parking versus making sure there is adequate turnover to give more shoppers access to Takapuna.” says Councillor McKay.

A progress report on the two hour free parking trial which started in July will be presented to the December Infrastructure and Environment Committee.
