Dump Your Hazardous Waste for Free with HazMobile
Dump Your Hazardous Waste for Free with HazMobile 2009
Hawke's Bay residents are getting an opportunity to clear the unwanted domestic hazardous waste out of their cupboards and garages safely and responsibly.
The 2009 HazMobile Collection is being held in Hastings at the Hastings Sports Centre, Railway Road, on Saturday 14 November and in Napier at Eastern Truck and Marine, Austin Street, on Sunday 15 November.
Trained staff run the free collection from 10am -2pm on each day.
The collections, which are supported by the Hawke's Bay Regional Council, Hastings District Council and Napier City Council, operate like a drive-through - cars drive through the site and the driver stays in the car. Staff unload your hazardous waste and you drive away - it is that easy!
You must stay in your vehicle as it is a hazardous site and your safety is important to us. It is best if you pack your waste in boxes so it’s ready for the crew to lift out of your vehicle.
This could include:
Household chemicals:
Including cleaners, disinfectants, polishes and pool
chemicals.
Garden chemicals: pesticides, herbicides and
fertilisers.
Automotive products: waste oil, petrol,
diesel and brake fluid.
DIY products: varnishes,
solvents, glues and wood preservatives.
Light bulbs: Fluorescent tubes, energy-saving light bulbs and ultraviolet light bulbs.
Batteries: wet-cell batteries used in cars and boats, dry-cell batteries used for appliances and toys. * Non-rechargeable dry-cell batteries (zinc carbon, zinc chloride and alkaline batteries in AA, AAA, C, and D sizes) are NOT classified as hazardous waste and can be disposed of in the normal household rubbish.
Paint: will be accepted at the collection for the last time this year. You can also take paint to Placemakers and Resene Colorshops throughout the year.
If you are unsure whether you can bring a product to HazMobile check the labelling – if it uses words such as “Warning ”, “Danger”, “Caution”, “Poison” or “Do not dispose of with household rubbish” you can safely assume HazMobile will accept it.
We do not accept commercial waste, or waste in commercial amounts.
Remember:
Always keep hazardous
materials out of the reach of children (and pets) in a
locked cupboard.
Make sure all hazardous items are
tightly sealed and kept away from heat or ignition sources
such as flames, sparks or even a car engine.
Keep your hazardous materials dry to prevent the container rusting. Please remember that plastic containers can turn brittle very quickly if exposed to strong sunlight, so keep them in a shady place.
Store different types of hazardous
substances in separate areas, for examples all corrosives
together and away from flammable products.
Always keep
things in their original container so that you know what it
is. If the label is falling off, tape it back on.
If the container is leaking and you have to use another, label it correctly and never put a hazardous product in a food or drink container.
